About me

Skylar is a filmmaker based in NYC, with an interest in amplifying voices unheard in mainstream media. Growing up with an intellectually disabled brother, and having a disability herself, she understands what it is like to be misrepresented in society — and in film. Through her work, she hopes to change popular misconceptions of those who deal with stigma.

She received her B.A. in Film & Media Studies at University of California, Berkeley in May of 2016. Throughout her time as an undergraduate student, she studied and specialized in film theory (documentary and scripted film), entrepreneurship, Middle Eastern politics, and Arabic.

Focusing on directing and producing films, Skylar has worked with companies such as The Atlantic, VICE, PBS, New York Times, CNN, The New Yorker, NFL, and Netflix on film and photography projects. Her film directing work has been recognized through a number of accolades with organizations such as the Clinton Global Initiative, Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas, and Red Bull Amaphiko’s Academy for Social Entrepreneurs.

With Outside the Lens, a nonprofit media literacy organization, and in collaboration with the UNHCR, NRC, and IRC, Skylar facilitated photography empowerment workshops with young women in Syrian refugee camps in Jordan. In collaboration with the Mediteran Film Festival, she coordinated a cross-cultural high school film program in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Most recently, she is a Creative Producer and Director for Condé Nast (Architectural Digest, SELF, CN Traveler), and she is currently directing her first feature-length documentary in partnership with Everywoman Studios.
